Gmail Dots and Plus Aliases: What Changes and What Does Not

A Gmail alias changes the address you give a sender without necessarily creating another mailbox. A temporary inbox changes where you read short-term messages. Understanding that difference helps you choose an address without assuming it offers more privacy or account separation than it does.

Do dots create another Gmail account?

For personal @gmail.com addresses, Google treats dotted versions of the same username as the same destination. Work and school domains can behave differently. Adding dots does not create an independent Google account.

What does a plus tag do?

A personal Gmail address can include a plus tag before @gmail.com. For example, a tag such as +newsletter helps distinguish incoming mail. Google documents this as an address variation for the existing mailbox. It is not a separate inbox or a guarantee that websites will treat the variation as a different identity.

How this differs from Gmail Temp on this site

Our Gmail Temp inbox displays messages imported for an alias of a connected account. Generating an alias does not create a personal Gmail account for you. The connected account owner and service administrators may have access to messages. Keep the inbox access token private and avoid confidential correspondence.

Choose the address for the task

  • Use your own Gmail alias to organize mail you want to keep receiving.
  • Use a temporary domain inbox for a short-lived, non-sensitive task when the receiving website permits it.
  • Use a permanent mailbox for purchases, password recovery, and anything you need to access later.

Before sharing an alias

Check the receiving site's email rules, copy the complete address, and send a harmless sample message when testing your own application. Do not assume that an alias is anonymous or that it will bypass another service's restrictions. If you plan to keep an account, register it with an address you control for the long term.

Common questions

Does an alias guarantee delivery?

No. The sender may reject an address, delay delivery, or apply its own filters. An accepted sign-up form is not proof that a message was sent.

Can I use a Gmail Temp address for recovery?

Use a permanent address instead. A temporary alias can expire before you need the recovery message. See the temporary-email FAQ for access and expiry details.
